FORMED as long ago as the early 1900s,Windlesham Football Club has certainly made its pitch on the now Field of Remembrance.
Many local families have produced players for the team over the decades.
Digging into the archives, the club won the 1937/38 Ascot and District League Cup, followed by the League's subsidiary Cup 1950, and runners up in 1951/52. These days the club belong to the Surrey Intermediate League, having in one year during the early 1960s won five cups, including the League Winners. The 1st team were promoted from the 2nd to the Premier division in 1991/92 season.
Sid Cook, the longest standing member of WFC, joined in 1946,a player until he decided to hang up his boots to manage the team and to this day remains a staunch supporter, and Sid is life President of the club. Sid was also awarded the B.E.M in 1991.
Sid unfortunately was admitted into a nursing home in early 2002.Sid unfortunately passed away in the home in March 2005, he will be sadly missed by many.
Sid is pictured below as proud manager of his winning team in the year of 1967 with five cup wins, many will also recognise, back row 3rd from left, the late Paddy Walsh. Paddy, once secretary of WUFC, eventually became first team managerand even more famous with his loudhailer at the Boxing Day Pram Race.
A story recalled by Sid from his early days with the club , occurred just after the war. All lined up and ready for their Saturday fixture with the Ascot and District League, the players were surprised to find their opposing team comprised German POWs from Reading. When at half time the POWs were leading 2-1, a local village supporter [eventually to become Mayor of Bagshot], stated that this simply was not good enough. Suffice to say that after a few words on recent history , WFC won 5-2!
The 1960s also boasted a ladies team. Any of those ladies still in the village? Non league, the ladies played charity matches but were put through their paces during training sessions twice a week, sometimes at the Chertsey Road Hall.
These days the club comprises 40 player members, entering two teams in the Surrey Intermediate League, there is a regular little crowd of supporters up at the Field of Remembrance for home matches on Saturday afternoons. After matches the players, supporters and opposing team toddle off to the Windlesham Club to celebrate- or commiserate!
So thank you to WFC past and present, for keeping Windlesham in the League tables, and also for their considerable involvement in two other important village events. Derek Davis, who is still treasurer after 41years, and secretary for 10 years, also helped to organise the village fete for 25 years before retiring after the year 2000 fete and celebrations, also helped to organise the Boxing Day Pram Race around Windlesham Village for 29 years, we had collections where we collected over £30000, and gave to various charities, before Derek retired in 1997.
Our thanks to the late Sid Cook and the late Harry Hicks, both of whom provided background information and pictures for this feature.

Since 2001 when this History page was published, Windlesham football club haven't moved on to much, remaining in the Surrey Intermediate League and well overdue from winning any major trophies, 2001/02 Premier Div 3 Champions, 2002/03 Division 2, 7th, 2003/04 the league cut down to 2 Divisions, Premier and Division 1, Windlesham went into Division 1 and finished 9th, 2004/05 Division 1, 4th, 2005/06 Div 1, 7th, 2006/07 Div 1, 6th, 2007/08, 7th, also was relegated to the Guildford and Woking League Premier division over disaplinary matters, and finished 9th in 2008/09, Windlesham also reached the Premier League challenge Cup final after being 1-0 up at half time finally losing 3-1. to AFC Bedfont Green
